No-capital trigeneration plant for UK hospital

A UK hospital is to benefit from a new 1.4 MWe CHP and cooling (trigeneration) system, to be supplied to Kingston Hospital NHS Trust under a 15-year ‘private finance initiative’ (PFI) agreement backed by an energy management contract, which will avoid the emission of around 4000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

The 15-year contract, with facilities and energy management company Dalkia, will provide an investment of £2.9 million (US$5.7 million) to completely refurbish the existing boilerhouse at the 632-bed Kingston Hospital and equip it with modern CHP plant. The agreement also includes the subsequent operation and maintenance of the new plant.

The Hospital Trust sought the investment as the existing heating boilers are at the end of their operational life.
